Statement of Respect to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and all Native Nations

Peace Action WI acknowledges that in Milwaukee we are on traditional Potawatomi, Ho-Chunk and Menominee homeland along the southwest shores of Michigami, North America’s largest system of freshwater lakes, where the Milwaukee, Menominee and Kinnickinnic rivers meet and the people of Wisconsin’s sovereign Anishinaabe, Ho-Chunk, Menominee, Oneida and Mohican Nations remain present. We affirm our solidarity and support for the rights of Wisconsin Indigenous Nations.

This forum is planned as a thoughtful discussion about the current conflict, politics, culture, and diplomacy surrounding the war in Ukraine.  Vladimir Putin launched the Russian invasion of the Republic of Ukraine in February 2022.  If a peaceful resolution of the war in Ukraine is to be achieved, it will not result from “victory” on either side.  It has evolved into a “war of attrition.”  Only a stalemate on the fighting fronts, caused by combat deadlock, exhaustion of resources, and war weariness would bring the competing forces to the peace table. If a cease-fire can be achieved, the best course for a lasting peace is through international arbitration and the willingness of Russia and Ukraine to resolve issues that led Putin to launch the Russian invasion and the Ukrainian defense of its national sovereignty. The United Nations is not officially supporting actual combat, but member states of the European Union and NATO are contributing to the defense of Ukraine in the spirit of Articles 40-51 of the UN Charter, its founding document, without resolution from its Security Council. International diplomacy is the only process a lasting peace treaty could be negotiated to end the current warfare.  All nations involved in the destructive war in Ukraine are UN members, but Russia is one of five permanent members on the Security Council and is responsible for the February 2022 invasion.

Guest Speaker: John Katzka, a graduate of UW-Milwaukee who did graduate work at George Washington and American Universities, served in the US Foreign Service for more than 25 years.  He served two tours in Moscow, the second during the collapse of the Soviet Union.  He also served in Thailand, Zambia, Yugoslavia, and Romania.  He was called back to duty to serve as a US Special Envoy to Kosovo, Serbia, and Macedonia.  In retirement, John serves on various community service boards in Cedarburg, WI and as co-coordinator of the World Future Society – Milwaukee Chapter.

Why do college students protest? They know truth about Israel's genocide in Gaza

"We are telling them that a bunch of tents on college campuses is more problematic than the ethnic cleansing of tens of thousands of Palestinians, including more than 70% of whom are women and children, done with our tax dollars and military support."

Global Week of Action on Nuclear Spending June 2024

June 17, 2024 at 12:00am - June 24, 2024

BernGlobal Geneva, GE Switzerland

From June 17 to 23, 2024 we’re taking on the absurd amount of money spent on nuclear weapons with a global week of action to coincide with the launch of our yearly nuclear spending report. The message? “No Money for Nuclear Weapons!”

We need everyone to push back against this unacceptable squandering of vast sums of money on weapons of mass destruction ($82.9 billion in 2022).

Peace Walk 2024 is a National Project of Veterans For Peace.  PeaceWalk2024.org.

NATO is planning a big celebration of 75 years of itself, with meetings beginning July 9, 2024, in Washington, D.C., at which we can expect many presidents, prime ministers, foreign secretaries, and weapons dealers.

We are planning a summit on Saturday July 6 and a rally on Sunday July 7, as well as various other actions in the days before and after that weekend — including working with allies planning a peace walk from Maine to join us in Washington, D.C. with events all along the way.

We say yes to peace and no to NATO!

We favor the abolition of NATO.

Summit of the Future
Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow

The Summit is a high-level event, bringing world leaders together to forge a new international consensus on how we deliver a better present and safeguard the future.

This once-in-a-generation opportunity serves as a moment to mend eroded trust and demonstrate that international cooperation can effectively tackle current challenges as well as those that have emerged in recent years or may yet be over the horizon.

We already have the "what" in the form of many existing agreements and commitments, starting with the UN Charter and including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the 2030 Agenda, the Paris Agreement, the Addis Ababa Action Agenda and many others.

View of the Eduardo Kobra mural at UN Headquarters depicting a man handing globe to young girl

Towards a Pact for the Future

The aim of the Summit is twofold: accelerate efforts to meet our existing international commitments and take concrete steps to respond to emerging challenges and opportunities.

This will be achieved through an action-oriented outcome document called the Pact for the Future.

The Pact will be negotiated, and endorsed by countries in the lead-up to and during the Summit in September 2024.

The result will be a world – and an international system – that is better prepared to manage the challenges we face now and in the future, for the sake of all humanity and for future generations.

 UN Summit of the Future

Interim People’s Pact for the Future, which will be a key civil society advocacy document for the UN Summit.

TAKE ACTION TO STOP US RETALIATION FOR ICJ RULING IN

SOUTH AFRICA v. ISRAEL

Email and call your congressional reps.

Capitol Hill switchboard: 202-224-3121

Sample Script: Hello, my name is __________ and I am your constituent in zip code ___________. Please issue a statement (email, social media post) urging the Biden administration to restore funding to UNRWA, the UN relief agency providing the bulk of humanitarian relief–water and food– to the imprisoned Palestinian people under Israeli assault in Gaza.  To cut off funding for UNRWA at Israel’s request is to threaten 2.3 million Gazans with mass starvation and turn Gaza into an extermination camp. Demand the White House fund UNRWA and not undermine the World Court order demanding provision of humanitarian aid. The US must not commit genocide in my name. Thank you.

URGENT! Call Congress: Stop the Gaza Genocide

Over 2 million Palestinian people trapped in Gaza are living through genocide in real time, as Israel bombs and starves them. Your solidarity is vital.

Representatives Cori Bush, Rashida Tlaib, Andre Carson, Summer Lee, and Delia Ramirez have just introduced a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire and for humanitarian assistance to be allowed to enter Gaza.  It is essential that we generate thousands of calls to elected officials asking them to support this life-saving resolution for a ceasefire.

TAKE ACTION: Call your members of Congress. It's extremely important to urge them to support this ceasefire.

Fill in your information and click "Call me.”

You'll receive a phone call on the number you provided and be patched through to your representatives' and senators' offices, one after the other. After you speak to one office, press * (star) to be connected to your next representative, until you've called all three. If you don't get through, leave a voicemail.

Note that we should be thanking Reps. Bush (MO-01), Tlaib (MI-12), Carson (IN-07), Lee (PA-12), Ramirez (IL-03), Bowman (NY-16), Watson Coleman (NJ-12), García (IL-04), Jackson (IL-01), Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14), Omar (MN-05), Pressley (MA-07), and Velázquez (NY-07) for their support of the resolution.

SCRIPT 1 FOR SENATORS:

My name is [YOUR FIRST & LAST NAME], and I'm a constituent of [SENATOR'S NAME]. I'm calling about Palestine and Israel. The senator must take immediate steps to deescalate, by calling for a ceasefire, pressuring Israel to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza, and refusing to send any additional weapons or funding to the Israeli military. I am asking the senator to publicly call for a ceasefire along the lines of the resolution in the House led by Cori Bush and Rashida Tlaib.

Any more military funding to Israel will further fuel violence by actively arming the Israeli government. This is a genocide. The senator must take action now to stop Israel's genocide against Palestinian people in Gaza and end all U.S. complicity in Israel's violence,

SCRIPT 2 FOR HOUSE REPRESENTATIVES:

My name is [YOUR FIRST & LAST NAME], and I'm a constituent of [REPRESENTATIVE'S NAME]. I'm calling about Palestine and Israel. The representative must take immediate steps to deescalate, by calling for a ceasefire, pressuring Israel to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza, and refusing to send any additional weapons or funding to the Israeli military. I urge the Representative to add their name to to the ceasefire resolution introduced by Reps. Bush and Tlaib and co sponsored by 11 other Representatives.

This is a genocide. The representative must take action now to stop Israel's genocide against Palestinian people in Gaza and end all U.S. complicity in Israel's violence.

Vienna’s International Summit for Peace in Ukraine Issues a Global Call for Action

Medea Benjamin on June 12, 2023 in Common Dreams

“The institutions established to ensure peace and security in Europe fell short, and the failure of diplomacy led to war," attendees said in a joint declaration. “Now diplomacy is urgently needed to end the war before it destroys Ukraine and endangers humanity.”

To amplify their call for a ceasefire, Summit participants committed themselves to organizing Global Weeks of Action—protests, street vigils and political lobbying—during the days of September 30-October 8.

National Priorities Project

Bar chart showing the military getting an increase and non-military getting cut in FY 2024 budget deal

Report: The Warfare State: How Funding for Militarism Compromises Our Welfare

https://www.nationalpriorities.org/analysis/2023/warfare-state-how-funding-militarism-compromises-our-welfare/

In FY 2023, out of a $1.8 trillion federal discretionary budget, $1.1 trillion — or 62 percent— was for militarized programs. That includes war and weapons, law enforcement and mass incarceration, and detention and deportation.

Less than $2 out of every $5 in federal discretionary spending was available to fund investment in people and communities, including primary and secondary public education, housing programs, child care programs, federal disaster relief, environmental programs, and scientific research.

The U.S. spent $16 on the military and war for every $1 that was spent on diplomacy and humanitarian foreign aid.

  • The vast majority of militarized spending was for weapons, war and the Pentagon, at $920 billion.

  • Only $56 billion was spent for international affairs, diplomacy, and humanitarian foreign aid.

We celebrate the life’s work of Daniel Ellsberg, who died on Friday, June 16, 2023.

In his farewell letter he urged all whistleblowers and peacemakers around world to continue the struggle for truth-telling and world peace. He helped end the Vietnam War by publishing the "Pentagon Papers", revealing the lies and corruption that got the US into that war. His book, "Confessions of a Nuclear War Planner", reveals how Pentagon planning for nuclear war included sacrificing the lives of 100's of millions of people.

Special Stand for “Daniel Ellsberg Week,” April 24-30. We celebrate the life’s work of Daniel Ellsberg, and to take action in support of whistleblowers and peacemakers, and to call on state and local governments around the country to honor the spirit of difficult truth-telling. His book, "Confessions of a Nuclear War Planner", reveals how Pentagon planning for nuclear war included sacrificing the lives of 100's of millions of people. He recently wrote a public letter disclosing that he has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, with only three to six months to live

Antiwar Activists Publish Ceasefire in Ukraine Petition in Washington, DC newspaper on Wednesday, May 24, 2023

Peace Action WI delivered the Peace in Ukraine appeal letter to Gwen Moore's office, Ron Johnson's Office and Tammy Baldwin's office.

To Presidents Biden, Putin and Zelensky:

IT’S TIME TO STOP THE KILLING AND DEVASTATION. CEASEFIRE & PEACE NEGOTIATIONS NOW!

The war in Ukraine has taken hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian and Russian lives, uprooted millions, contaminated land, air and water and worsened the climate crisis.

The longer the war goes on, the greater the danger of spiraling escalation which can lead to a wider war, environmental devastation and nuclear annihilation.

The war diverts billions that could be addressing urgent human needs.

Total military victory cannot be achieved by either Russia or Ukraine. It is time to support the calls by Pope Francis, United Nations Secretary-General Guterres, Presidents Lula de Silva of Brazil, Erdoğan of Turkey, Xi of China, and others for a ceasefire and a negotiated end to this calamitous war.

Stop the killing, agree to a ceasefire and begin negotiations!

US congresswoman Betty McCollum (D) introduces bill

"Defending the Human Rights of Palestinian Children and Families Living Under Israeli Military Occupation Act"

https://mccollum.house.gov/media/press-releases/mccollum-reintroduces-defending-human-rights-palestinian-children-and-families

The measure, backed by 17 Democrats, would ban US assistance to Israel from contributing to detention of Palestinian children.

The legislation prohibits Israel’s government from using U.S. taxpayer dollars in the Occupied West Bank for the military detention, abuse, or ill treatment of Palestinian children in Israeli military detention; the seizure and destruction of Palestinian property and homes in violation of international humanitarian law; or any assistance or support for unilateral annexation of Palestinian lands in violation of international humanitarian law.

Bangor Trident Nuclear Sub Base - Kitsap, WA - August 8, 2022

Flash Mob performs "War What Is It Good For" by Edwin Starr
Amazingly choreographed 6 minute video of a demonstration outside the Nuclear Weapons site.
When the dance was completed, some people remained on the roadway holding two large banners that read "ABOLISH NUCLEAR WEAPONS" and "NUCLEAR WEAPONS ARE ILLEGAL: Get them out of Kitsap County" respectively. Eleven activists were removed from the roadway by Washington State Patrol Officers and cited for "Pedestrian on roadway illegally". The other two activists crossed the Blue Line onto the submarine base, were detained by Naval security personnel, and cited for "Trespassing" on Federal property.

  1. The carbon bootprint of the US military, larger than that of many countries.
  2. The wars for oil and other resources – how they support the fossil fuel-based status quo.
  3. The unequal burden of both climate crisis and militarism on people of color, the poor, and future generations.
  4. The resources spent on militarism and war – redirect to respond to the existential threat of climate crisis.

Because it's 100 seconds to midnight,

The threat of nuclear war is now higher than it was during the Cold War.
That’s according to former Defense Secretary William Perry -- who is no peacenik.

That’s why it’s more urgent than ever that our Representatives institute a policy of No First Use and No Sole Authority in order to reduce the grave peril posed by nuclear weapons. Ask your Senators and Representative and Congressional leadership to support legislation to institute a United States policy of No First Use of nuclear weapons.

It’s important that we act now. President Joe Biden's Nuclear Posture Review is underway, and it will determine his administration’s approach to nuclear policy. If we want to avoid a devastating nuclear war, we need to demonstrate broad public support for a policy of No First Use. Call and Email Congress to tell them to support a No First Use policy for nuclear weapons!

There are two bills in Congress, the Markey-Lieu Bill (S.1148, HR.669) and the Warren-Smith Bill (S.1219, HR.2603), that would institute a No First Use Policy. These bills should be uncontroversial for anyone who wants to avoid a potentially disastrous nuclear war. Yet, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer haven’t used their leadership to make sure these bills get a vote. Call on your Representatives to institute a policy of No First Use and demand that Pelosi and Schumer bring the bills to a vote!
