The Coalition to SAVE the Menominee River and the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin have joined forces to protect the Menominee River from the Back Forty Project,  a proposed metallic sulfide mine next to the river. So far, their combined public education efforts and legal challenges have forced the withdrawal of Aquila Resources, a Canadian exploration company, from the project. However, a new company, the Gold Resource Corporation (GORO) of Denver, Colorado, has acquired the assets of Aquila Resources and has asserted that they will have all the permits for the Back Forty Project in hand by the end of 2023 with construction to begin by early 2024.

Dr. Al Gedicks is an environmental sociologist and Indigenous rights activist and scholar. He is emeritus professor of sociology at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and the Executive Secretary of the Wisconsin Resources Protection Council, a statewide environmental organization to educate the public about metallic sulfide mining projects in the upper Midwest. He is presently working with the Menominee Nation and the Coalition to SAVE the Menominee River to oppose the Back Forty Project next to the Menominee River.

Anahkwet (Guy Reiter) is a traditional Menominee who resides on the Menominee Reservation and the executive Director of Menīkānaehkem, Inc., a Menominee Indian community organization. Anahkwet serves his community as an organizer, activist, author, amateur archaeologist and lecturer. He also is a member of the Menominee Constitutional Taskforce.

Dale Burie is  retired and built his retirement home only 1/4 mile from the Menominee River 20 miles North of Marinette, Wisconsin. Dale and Lea Jane organized their first meeting pf the "Coalition to SAVE the Menominee River, Inc." The Coalition's work continues challenging the next owner of the Back Forty project on the Menominee River. Their website is www.jointherivercoalition.org

Noam Chomsky: Ukraine and Beyond

Thu May 26 @ 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm EDT

“Meanwhile, by extending the conflict instead of seeking to end it, we impose severe costs on Ukrainians, drive millions of people to death by starvation, hurtle the burning planet even more rapidly to the sixth mass extinction, and — if we are lucky — escape terminal war.”

In this presentation, Noam Chomsky will touch on the roots of the Ukraine war and potential paths to a sane resolution through an all-out effort of diplomacy and statecraft. He will examine the disastrous strategy the U.S. is presently pursuing in Ukraine and the implications of Finland and Sweden joining NATO. But he will expand the scope of his analysis by looking at the frightening impacts that the decisions of “world leaders” toward this “criminal Russian invasion” are having far beyond Ukraine. For instance, he sees the perpetuation of the war as basically a program of mass murder through starvation throughout much of the Global South.

WI CUBA COALITION RESUMES LIFT THE BLOCKADE OF CUBA Bike & CAR CARAVAN

SUNDAY, May 29, 2022, 1 PM

MEET AT MITCHELL PARK DOMES PARKING LOT (524 S Layton), near 27th St

Join this worldwide movement, started by Cuban-Americans in Miami, continuing in many cities throughout the U.S. and Canada, generally on the last Sunday of each month.

We will begin in the parking lot at Mitchell Park with a short rally featuring the newly elected MKE County Supervisor for Dist. 12, Juan Miguel Martinez, Voces de la Frontera, and caravan sponsors, then caravan through neighborhood(s) and return to Mitchell Park about 3:15 PM.

The US has recently eased some restrictions on travel and sending money to families.  Story here.

Apparently, it wasn’t enough that the Biden administration refused to invite Cuba to the Summit of the Americas. Now they denied visas to 23 members of Cuban civil society who were invited to participate in the People’s Summit for Democracy in Los Angeles from June 8-10.  The People’s Summit is an alternative to the Summit of the Americas, and it seeks to uplift the voices of the people and imagine a new world; one that puts people’s democracy first.

Why block 23 Cubans from speaking to a crowd of thousands at the People’s Summit? Perhaps because the U.S. government is afraid they’ll tell the truth about the cruelty of the Trump-era sanctions that Biden has kept in place, and the cruelty of 60+ years of a blockade and attempted regime change. While Biden recently made some minor improvements, the blockade is still in place and, shamefully, Cuba still remains on the U.S. list of states that sponsor terrorism!

Tell Secretary of State Blinken: Approve the visas for the 23 Cubans invited to the People’s Summit!

Peace advocates have recently expressed the slogan, Say No to NATO,” objecting to the expansion of the alliance member- ship since the collapse of the Soviet Union, bringing the North Atlantic Treaty Organization member nations to the borders of contemporary Russia.

Led by the U.S., NATO’s response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine has raised concerns about the alliance’s mission of maintaining European security.

This UNA-GM forum will examine the relationship of NATO to the UN and discuss the policies that have brought many European countries into conflict with Russia.

Commemorate the Historic June 12 Demonstration for Nuclear Disarmament and Human Needs

June 12, 2022 from 11 AM to 3 PM CT

This June 12th will mark the 40th anniversary of the largest peace demonstration in United States history. On this historic day, one million people marched from the United Nations, filled the streets of New York City, and rallied in Central Park to demand an end to the nuclear arms race and a shifting of resources to human needs. People from all over the world spoke with one voice to say "No More Hiroshimas” and “Abolish Nuclear Weapons." The demonstration catalyzed action to freeze and reverse the arms race.

On Sunday, June 12 — from 12 noon to 4 pm ET — we are planning a special online event to help commemorate this historic time in our history, to reflect, learn, and examine the nuclear disarmament movement then and now. The goal of the commemoration is not only to study the past, but to inspire a new generation of organizers and concerned people to take up the antinuclear banner and work for a future without nuclear weapons, a future grounded in social and climate justice, democracy, and an end to militarism.

International Day of Action for Peace in Ukraine: June 25

We can have a dedicated Stand for Peace on June 25, which is at Port Washington Rd & Silver Spring Rd.

This devastating war is killing thousands, displacing millions, and causing hunger, inflation, unrest, and increased militarism globally. Add to that the threat of nuclear war. We need to educate the American people on how the war economy  is hurting them too. They have tremendous sympathy for Ukrainians, but don’t understand that the way to save Ukrainian lives is to stop the war.

If you would like to collect hard copy signatures, you can print this petition from CODEPINK

Pizzas and beverages will be provided.

We will open a zoom meeting for those of you who can't attend in person- sorry pizza not available through zoom !

$40 Billion War Fever Grips Congress as U.S. Escalates Ukraine War

The House of Representativeshas approved $40 billion of aid to Ukraine 368-57.  All Democrats in the House and all WI representatives voted yes.

We condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. But the Administration has been telegraphing for weeks that its war aims now go well beyond defending Ukraine.  President Biden said that President Putin cannot remain in power.  Secretary of Defense Austin said the U.S. seeks to weaken Russia.  And Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that we are fighting until “victory”.

The Biden Administration has not outlined a strategy for ending the war – only one for hitting back at Russia.  Secretary of State Blinken has not met with Russian Foreign Secretary Lavrov since the Russian invasion started more than two months ago.   There is no off ramp.  There is no diplomacy.

Tell your legislators to reconsider and support peace instead of war in Ukraine!

At Least 400,000 Yemeni Children Under 5 Could Die Of Starvation This Year: UN Agencies

. In 2022, worst-case estimates are that 400,000 Yemeni children may die — one every 75 seconds or more than 1,100 per day. As the situation deteriorates, 16 million Yemenis are on the brink of starvation with 2.3 million children under 5 suffering acute malnutrition; a spike in food prices and a further collapse of Yemen's currency in summer 2021 is driving even more children to hunger. For more information, please contact [email protected].

A Million Afghan Children Could Starve This Winter. Are US Sanctions to Blame? | The NationUS allows aid for Afghanistan despite sanctions against Taliban | United Nations News | Al Jazeera

Dial 202-224-3121 NOW ! Call your Senators and Congressional Representatives

Demand that the Biden administration unfreeze Afghanistan’s assets, return all 7 billion to their country, so they can restart their economy and feed their people.

Hello Senator _____________ I am calling about the one million children in Afghanistan who face death by starvation.
President Biden should do more immediately.  He should relax sanctions on Afghanistan and increase humanitarian aid through the United Nations. Antonio Guterres, the Secretary General of the United Nations, has warned that millions of Afghans are on the “verge of death,” 22.8 million Afghans – or more than half of the country’s population – will face acute food insecurity this winter and one million children risk dying of malnutrition.

Because it's 100 seconds to midnight,

The threat of nuclear war is now higher than it was during the Cold War.
That’s according to former Defense Secretary William Perry -- who is no peacenik.

That’s why it’s more urgent than ever that our Representatives institute a policy of No First Use and No Sole Authority in order to reduce the grave peril posed by nuclear weapons. Ask your Senators and Representative and Congressional leadership to support legislation to institute a United States policy of No First Use of nuclear weapons.

It’s important that we act now. President Joe Biden's Nuclear Posture Review is underway, and it will determine his administration’s approach to nuclear policy. If we want to avoid a devastating nuclear war, we need to demonstrate broad public support for a policy of No First Use. Call and Email Congress to tell them to support a No First Use policy for nuclear weapons!

There are two bills in Congress, the Markey-Lieu Bill (S.1148, HR.669) and the Warren-Smith Bill (S.1219, HR.2603), that would institute a No First Use Policy. These bills should be uncontroversial for anyone who wants to avoid a potentially disastrous nuclear war. Yet, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer haven’t used their leadership to make sure these bills get a vote. Call on your Representatives to institute a policy of No First Use and demand that Pelosi and Schumer bring the bills to a vote!
