Debate: Is War in Ukraine Justified? Madison Watch Party for World BEYOND War’s conference
September 24 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm EDT
FREE
We’ll watch this debate on the Ukraine war together! It’s part of the conference – No War 2023: Nonviolent Resistance to Militarism – RSVP to [email protected] please.
In this 1.5 hour friendly debate, moderated by Marcy Winograd of CODEPINK, we’ll hear 3 perspectives debated: 1) Russia had no choice but to invade Ukraine, argued by former CIA analyst Ray McGovern, 2) Ukraine had no choice but to fight Russia, argued by journalist James Brooke who works as the Ukraine/Russia columnist for The New York Sun, and 3) Russia and Ukraine both had options better than war, argued by WBW Executive Director David Swanson.

In an endless war with already a half million casualties, is it more helpful to continue it -- risking nuclear apocalypse and guaranteeing impediments to addressing climate collapse -- or to demand a ceasefire, peace negotiations, and a commitment to sending no more weapons?
A public discussion featuring Medea Benjamin, Helena Cobban, Ray McGovern, and David Swanson.

As the war in Ukraine continues to intensify, with the growing danger of a direct U.S. confrontation with Russia, Peace in Ukraine and CODEPINK are launching a new action plan focusing on Congress called: “The Urgency of Pursuing Peace in Ukraine.” We will be asking our elected officials to call for: Ceasefire, Diplomacy, and No More Weapons.
The launch will feature an evening talk including Dr. Cornel West, CODEPINK Co-founder Medea Benjamin, journalist Eugene Puryear, and comedian/podcaster Lee Camp, followed the next morning by a National Advocacy Day. While some advocates will be advocating on Capitol Hill, local constituents will be calling in or joining the DC meetings by zoom.
These events are designed to educate, inspire and mobilize people to action. We must get serious about putting this Congress and administration on notice that they must reverse their present course, which is taking us to the precipice of a nuclear confrontation. Instead, they must join us in calling for a ceasefire and negotiations to end this terrible conflict that is spinning out of control.

Many of his numerous musician friends performed and Kevin Martin, national director of Peace Action, from Washington DC to spoke about George's contributions to world peace on behalf of the national peace movement. It will be a fine tribute to George Martin's life.
From Julie Enslow:
George Martin passed from this life to the next on Sunday, July 16, 2023. His dynamic presence will be greatly missed by friends all over the country and beyond.
George was a “force of nature” as a friend has said. He was a trainer, organizer, leader and passionate orator for peace and justice. He was committed to nonviolence and the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. His work and leadership over the years with economic development, civil rights, homeless vets, healthcare for the homeless, the Green Party, the World Social Forum, the World Peace Council, the anti-war/nuclear disarmament movement and climate action has made a powerful impact locally, nationally and internationally.
George served as Program Director of Peace Action Wisconsin. In recent years he has focused his energy on climate justice and the link between militarism and climate change. He has served on the steering committee of 350 Milwaukee and on the task force to develop the Milwaukee County/City plan to address climate change and economic equity. His last public appearance was a few weeks ago when he gave a powerful testimony before the City Council urging them to accept the proposed plan for climate action. He was mesmerizing. The proposal passed. He is now with the ancestors."
As George would always sign off -
Peace and Love, Julie Enslow
from Bernie Sanders:
Turn on the TV and you're sure to hear my colleagues express deep concern about the national debt. Taking on climate change? Can't afford it. Medicare for All? Too expensive. Tuition-free college? Our old friend the deficit...
But when it comes time to vote for military spending, I never hear those wails and moans from the so-called "deficit hawks." As a nation, our priorities are extraordinarily distorted.
The Senate is once again debating a $886 billion defense authorization bill, and unless there are major changes to the bill I intend to vote NO. I hope you'll sign my petition urging my colleagues to do the same.

Vienna’s International Summit for Peace in Ukraine Issues a Global Call for Action
Medea Benjamin on June 12, 2023 in Common Dreams
“The institutions established to ensure peace and security in Europe fell short, and the failure of diplomacy led to war," attendees said in a joint declaration. “Now diplomacy is urgently needed to end the war before it destroys Ukraine and endangers humanity.”
To amplify their call for a ceasefire, Summit participants committed themselves to organizing Global Weeks of Action—protests, street vigils and political lobbying—during the days of September 30-October 8.

Report: The Warfare State: How Funding for Militarism Compromises Our Welfare
https://www.nationalpriorities.org/analysis/2023/warfare-state-how-funding-militarism-compromises-our-welfare/
In FY 2023, out of a $1.8 trillion federal discretionary budget, $1.1 trillion — or 62 percent— was for militarized programs. That includes war and weapons, law enforcement and mass incarceration, and detention and deportation.
Less than $2 out of every $5 in federal discretionary spending was available to fund investment in people and communities, including primary and secondary public education, housing programs, child care programs, federal disaster relief, environmental programs, and scientific research.
The U.S. spent $16 on the military and war for every $1 that was spent on diplomacy and humanitarian foreign aid.
-
The vast majority of militarized spending was for weapons, war and the Pentagon, at $920 billion.
-
Only $56 billion was spent for international affairs, diplomacy, and humanitarian foreign aid.
We celebrate the life’s work of Daniel Ellsberg, who died on Friday, June 16, 2023.
In his farewell letter he urged all whistleblowers and peacemakers around world to continue the struggle for truth-telling and world peace. He helped end the Vietnam War by publishing the "Pentagon Papers", revealing the lies and corruption that got the US into that war. His book, "Confessions of a Nuclear War Planner", reveals how Pentagon planning for nuclear war included sacrificing the lives of 100's of millions of people.

Peace Action WI delivered the Peace in Ukraine appeal letter to Gwen Moore's office, Ron Johnson's Office and Tammy Baldwin's office.
To Presidents Biden, Putin and Zelensky:
IT’S TIME TO STOP THE KILLING AND DEVASTATION. CEASEFIRE & PEACE NEGOTIATIONS NOW!
The war in Ukraine has taken hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian and Russian lives, uprooted millions, contaminated land, air and water and worsened the climate crisis.
The longer the war goes on, the greater the danger of spiraling escalation which can lead to a wider war, environmental devastation and nuclear annihilation.
The war diverts billions that could be addressing urgent human needs.
Total military victory cannot be achieved by either Russia or Ukraine. It is time to support the calls by Pope Francis, United Nations Secretary-General Guterres, Presidents Lula de Silva of Brazil, Erdoğan of Turkey, Xi of China, and others for a ceasefire and a negotiated end to this calamitous war.
Stop the killing, agree to a ceasefire and begin negotiations!

Special Stand for “Daniel Ellsberg Week,” April 24-30. We celebrate the life’s work of Daniel Ellsberg, and to take action in support of whistleblowers and peacemakers, and to call on state and local governments around the country to honor the spirit of difficult truth-telling. His book, "Confessions of a Nuclear War Planner", reveals how Pentagon planning for nuclear war included sacrificing the lives of 100's of millions of people. He recently wrote a public letter disclosing that he has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, with only three to six months to live

The Israeli Occupation Forces bombed Gaza last week. Join the global call on the U.S. to stop funding the ethnic cleansing of Palestine!
Dear President Biden Members of the U.S. Congress,
The events that transpired in Gaza last week make one thing clear: US taxpayer dollars that go to Israel in the form of $3.8 billion in military “aid” are being used to further harm and kill Palestinians. We, the undersigned, are demanding that the United States stops funding Israeli war crimes and human rights abuses and halt all weapons sales to the occupation.
Your administration insists that it cares deeply about human rights around the globe, yet you refuse to hold Israeli occupation accountable for its daily human rights abuses.
The slaughter and daily assault on Palestinian human rights being carried out by Israel is an unacceptable use of US taxpayer dollars. We demand an end to U.S. collaboration in the ethnic cleansing of Palestine.
US Members of Congress like Representatives Betty McCollum, Chuy Garcia, Marie Newman, Rashida Tlaib and several others have called for the conditioning of aid to Israel. The concept of revoking or halting aid is not new, and it is supported by many lawmakers and their constituents. We call on Congress to suspend all aid and block any weapons sale that gets announced to the occupation.
US taxpayers pay Israel over 10 million dollars a day, and Israel uses that money to inflict violence all over Palestine. We call you to halt this “aid” and demand that Israel stop its assault on Gaza, its evictions in East Jerusalem, and its attacks on Al-Aqsa. We demand that not one more tax payer dollar gets sent to fund apartheid and anti-Palestinian violence. We look forward to seeing how you will carry out these demands.
In the face of widespread concern about the threat of nuclear weapons, World BEYOND War joins with organizations and individuals across the country in releasing the following statement:
The power to initiate a global apocalypse lies in the hands of the leaders of nine nations. As 122 nations of the world indicated when they adopted the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in July, 2017, this is unacceptable.
As concerns about the threat of nuclear weapons re-enter the public consciousness, it is important to know that humankind is not without an answer to the nuclear threat. The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which entered into force on January 22, 2021, provides a clear pathway to the elimination of the nuclear threat.
We also call on the U.S. media to recognize the existence of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and to include the Treaty in discussions, articles, and editorials regarding the nuclear threat and methods available to address it.
The Statement has been endorsed by Peace Action WI and organizations representing hundreds of thousands of people in the United States as well as by a growing list of individuals. A list of signatories can be found at nuclearbantreaty.org.
