Peace Action Steering Committee Member Nomination Application

The Peace Action WI Nomination Committee is seeking nominations for the 2011 PA Steering Committee. The Nomination Committee will review the list of nominees and prepare a slate of nominees which best fit the needs of our organization. This slate will be presented at our annual membership meeting in November 2010 for a vote by our current membership. (Mail-in ballots will be made available with the November newsletter, The Mobilizer, if you are unable to attend the membership meeting.)

Peace Action Wisconsin Steering Committee Member Job Description

The affairs of Peace Action WI are managed by a Board of Directors known as the Steering Committee (SC). The SC is comprised of at least 6 people elected by the membership at large or replaced by the SC itself in case of mid-term vacancy.  Decisions are made using a modified consensus process.  The SC chooses officers (President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer) at the January meeting, and its term is January-December.  Nominees must attend the November membership meeting and, if elected, are strongly encouraged to attend the December SC meeting before their term begins.

Goal: The SC is collectively responsible for ensuring effective and fiscally-sound programs and operations by providing vision, leadership, advice, and direction to the staff and volunteers of Peace Action WI.

Qualifications:

  • Current Peace Action Wisconsin membership
  • Commitment to the Peace Action Wisconsin mission, goals and programs
  • Specific experience or knowledge in at least one management area (fundraising skills or connections to potential donors, organizational development, accounting, finance, legal, web/networking, etc.), or a field related to Peace Action's programs or services (peace and international studies, conflict resolution, political science, experience with political campaigns, issue organizing, etc.)
  • Willingness to learn and to receive training
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Willingness to serve as a committee chair
  • Adequate time availability and willingness to participate

Responsibilities:

  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of serving on the Steering Committee.
  • Know and follow the mission, goals, policies and procedures of Peace Action WI .
  • Be accessible, at least by phone, to Directors, committee members, and the staff.
  • Serve as an advocate of Peace Action WI  to friends or other organizations in which you are involved.
  • Maintain knowledge of current programs of Peace Action WI and attend at least some events.
  • Contribute at least six to ten hours per month by attending monthly SC and issue or organizational committee meetings, two annual planning meetings, participating in SC-related activities, fulfilling committee assignments, making donor visits, etc.  
  • Hold in confidence any proprietary information given to SC Directors.
  • Prepare for each SC meeting by reading material distributed prior to the meeting.
  • Suggest agenda items periodically for SC meetings, to ensure that significant policy-related matters are addressed.
  • Attend all regular and special SC meetings and participate in the proceedings.  Meetings are normally on the 4th Monday of each month.  Give notice in case of illness or unavoidable absence. Punctuality is important.
  • Participate in annual Strategic Planning meetings with staff to plan the upcoming year’s issue work.
  • Serve actively on at least one organizational committee (Personnel, Fundraising, Board Development, Finance, Membership, etc.) or issue committee (Disarmament, Military Recruitment, Mid-East, etc.).
  • Fulfill commitments within the agreed-upon deadlines.
  • Make a personal financial contribution to Peace Action WI of at least $100.  Limited income SC members may fulfill this commitment by raising money through sales of event and raffle tickets, etc.
  • Participate actively in the fundraising efforts of Peace Action WI, whether by speaking at a fund raising event, helping to organize a fund raiser, making a major donor visit, hosting a house party, etc.

PA WI 2010 Steering Committee Decisions
July 26, 2010 – In response to the Middle East Committee of Peace Action offer to have Peace Action’s name included on the billboard that they are proposing on the ongoing Israeli Siege of Palestinian Lands. Statement to Middle East Committee (agreed to by consensus): We cannot reach consensus on the request as it has been presented to the Steering Committee of Peace Action Wisconsin. We greatly admire your efforts and passion. We request the Middle East Committee elect a delegate to serve as a voting member on the SC because we wish to collaborate and communicate more effectively with this important committee in the future. We wish you luck in this endeavor. Thank you for your efforts and we look forward to seeing the billboard.
June 28, 2010 – Motion passed to approve paying for shelving material that Mike Trokan will build for the garage.
May 24, 2010 – Kevin Schwerdtfeger (KAS) sent a letter of resignation from SC.
May 24, 2010 – Motion passed by consensus for new Peace Action Policy: In addition to our long history supporting diversity and opposing racism, xenophobia and anti-immigrant prejudice, PA-WI reiterates its opposition to all forms of anti-Semitism, anti-Arab racism, anti-Jewish racism, and Islamophobia. We will refrain from any use of symbolism disparaging any religion or ethnic group.
May 24, 2010 – Motion passed to have minor roof repairs completed, to hold off on cost of a new roof for a few more years.
May 24, 2010 – Motion denied to have an appeal letter asking for donations to fund a new roof.
Apr. 28, 2010 – Bylaw change re: Term Limits – voted to delay vote on bylaw change until next meeting (5 to delay, 3 to vote now). Bob Graf resigned from the SC.
Apr. 28, 2010 – Motion passed to give Chris Kuehnel the authority to make decision on copier lease.
Mar. 22, 2010 – Motion passed to have PA co-sponsor Saul Landau event 4/26/10
Mar. 22, 2010 – Motion passed to change next SC meeting to 4/28 so not to conflict with the Saul Landau event.

Jan. 25, 2010 – Amended proposed bylaw change on term limits to read: “The term of office for Steering committee members shall be three two years in length. A Steering Committee member may serve two three consecutive terms (a total of six (6) years) …”. The above amended bylaw change was voted down.
Jan. 25, 2010 – Voted to elect Brian Bunzel on the Steering Committee as the representative for the Peace Seekers of Washington County.
