“Rights of Immigrants after 9/11 & What Happens When Local Police Are Used to Enforce Immigration Laws”
Wednesday March 31 7:00 pm
Peace Action Center, 1001 E. Keefe
Speaker Atty. Azadeh Shahshahshani, Director National Security/Immigrants’ Rights Project of the Georgia ACLU, and co-chair of the National Lawyers Guild International Committee.
Organizing for the ACLU in Georgia & North Carolina, Ms. Shahshahshani led a study documenting
how Homeland Security’s agreement with local law police to enforce immigration laws created “an atmosphere of terror where immigrants
are afraid to contact police”; initiated a statewide campaign against racial profiling; coordinated training for attorneys to represent Muslim and Middle Eastern clients facing human rights violations; and led a statewide campaign calling for the investigation of a NC-based air carrier which has transported foreign nationals to torture and detention.
