Description

What’s really going on in Venezuela? Is the U.S. mass media telling us the whole story?
Hear Charles Hardy, Author and international correspondent in Venezuela for over 20 years

Monday, November 15, 2010, 7pm
UWM Union, Ballroom West, 2200 E. Kenwood Blvd.
Free & open to the public

A former Maryknoll priest, Mr. Hardy lived for nearly a decade in a shanty in one of the notoriously harsh barrios surrounding Venezuela’s capital, Caracas. He directly confronted soldiers during the infamous 1989 army crackdown on anti-IMF protests that left over a thousand dead, pleading with them to stop the violence against their people. He lived through the aftermath of the U.S.-backed coup in 2002 against Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez (which was overturned two days later in a massive peaceful uprising of average Venezuelans and low ranking soldiers), as well as the election last month that saw Chávez’s socialist party capture a large majority of the National Assembly (one of over 14 national electoral processes since Chávez was first elected in 1998). Mr. Hardy recently authored the book, “Cowboy in Caracas, A North American's Memoir of Venezuela's Democratic Revolution.” He will discuss the significance of Chávez’s electoral successes and setbacks, and examine U.S.-Venezuela relations under the Obama Administration, among other topics.
