"Rights of Immigrants & Residents after 9/11 & What Happens When Local Police Are Used to Enforce Immigration Laws," a talk by Atty. Azadeh Shahshahshani, Director of the National Security/Immigrants' Rights Project of the Ga. ACLU, and co-chair of the Natl. Lawyers Guild International Committee. Wednesday March 31, 2010, 7pm at the Peace Action Center

Organizing for the ACLU in Georgia & North Carolina, Atty. Shahshahshani led a study documenting how Homeland Security's agreement with local law police to enforce immigration laws created "an atmosphere of terror where immigrants are afraid to contact police" especially in Latino communities; initiated a statewide campaign against racial profiling; coordinated training for attorneys to represent Muslim and Middle Eastern clients facing human rights violations; and led a statewide campaign calling for the investigation of a North Carolina-based air carrier which has transported foreign nationals to torture and detention.
