Lanterns for Peace has been expanded this year to include afternoon workshops, and a special program for children with the Milwaukee Public Theatre. The event will start out with workshops for 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., covering issues such as efforts to decrease weapons stockpiles, nuclear weapons in space and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. At the same time, there will be a special children’s program with Milwaukee Public Theatre where children will use Kabuki Theater to explore peace issues. The children will give a theatrical performance during the evening program. The evening program will include a performance by the DanceCircus Youth Dance Company, speakers and music by folksinger David H.B. Drake of Organic Arts. There will be a Peace CafĂ© with food for sale throughout the evening, as well as an opportunity for children to make peace lanterns. At 8:00 p.m., everyone will move to the Milwaukee Rowing Club where the peace lanterns will be floated down the Milwaukee River, just as it is traditionally done in Japan. The Peace Education Project and Lanterns for Peace were featured in the Japanese newspaper Akahata this month. We have received calls and e-mails from Japanese groups who put on their own Lanterns for Peace events, and have asked us to send them a message that they could use at their event.
